என் ஆயாவிட்டு அய்யாவின் தேவகோட்டையில் உள்ள பெரிய வீட்டின் பெயர் பில்லூர் ஜமீன்தார் வீடு. சிறு வயதிலிருந்தே கேட்டு வளந்த பெயர். இப்போதுதான் அதன் பின்னால் உள்ள கதையை கேக்கும் ஆர்வம் வந்தது. ஒரு மாலை கைபேசியில் அவர்களிடம் பேசும் போது இதைப்பற்றி வினவினேன். அவர்களும் ஆசையாய் இந்த கதையை சொன்னார்கள்.
செட்டியார்களின் பிரதான தொழில் வட்டிக்கு பணம் கொடுத்து வாங்குதல். அந்த காலத்தில் நிலத்தை இப்பொது ரியல் எஸ்டேட் செய்வது போல் ஒடனே வித்து பணம் ஆக முடியாது. பொழக்கத்திற்காக பணம் வட்டிக்கு வாங்குவது உண்டு. பல கிராமங்களின் ஜமீன்தாரான அழ. அரு. வீடு எமது பாட்டையா சேவுகன் செட்டியாரிடம் இருந்து ரூ.3,00,000 கடன் வாங்கி இருந்தார்கள். அதை ரொக்கமாக திருப்பி தருவதற்கு பதிலாக என் பாட்டையாவை அவர்களிடம் இருந்த பில்லூர் என்னும் கிராமத்துக்கு (சேலம் அருகில் உள்ளது) ஜமீன்தார் ஆக்கினார்கள். சேவுகன் செட்டியார் அடுத்த நாள் பில்லூர் ஜமீன்தாராக அங்கு சென்றார். அதற்கு அடுத்த நாளே ஜமீன்தாரி முறை ஒழிப்புச் சட்டம் 1949, தமிழ்நாட்டில் அமலுக்கு வந்தது. சேவுகன் செட்டியார் அந்த கிராமத்தின் உரிமையை ஒரே நாளில் இழந்தார். அனால் பில்லூர் ஜமீன்தார் என்ற பெயர் இன்று வரை தொடர்கிறது. இந்த கதையை கேட்டவுடன் ‘நான் முதல்வன் ‘ படம் தான் நினைவுக்கு வந்தது.
My maternal grandfather’s house in my native village is called ‘ Pillur jamindar veedu’. One day it struck me that I never came across a village called Pillur in my life. Where is this village? How did we migrate here? I turned to my grandfather to help me answer these questions. Instead I got a hilarious story to document for a lifetime.
The Nagarathar community is known for the lending business. Back then, real estate was not as attractive as it is now. Most people could not afford to buy land. Money was borrowed for cash rotation. One such transaction was when AL.AR house, who were jamindars of multiple villages, had borrowed money from my great grandfather Sevugan Chettiar. When they were due to return the capital, they wrote off one of their zamindari rights of the village named Pillur to Sevugan chettiar. Overwhelmed in joy, Sevugan Chettiar went to the village as a Zamindar. The next day, The TamilNadu Estates Act, 1948 was established that abolished zamindari rights in the state. Sevugan chettiar was zamindar for just one day but the name lived for generations to come.
This anecdote reminded me of the Tamil movie ‘Mudhalvan’. Though no social change was brought forth, the seat of power was indeed relished.
